DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO (2024–Present) — Over the past two years in Kinshasa, more than 120 physicians have taken part in a leadership initiative aimed at strengthening both healthcare delivery and organizational effectiveness. Grounded in a Christian perspective, the program has equipped doctors with practical leadership skills while emphasizing integrity, service, and a deeper sense of calling within their work. The initiative reflects a collaboration between U.S.-based leadership and Congolese implementation, resulting in a growing network of physicians better prepared to lead hospitals, mentor teams, and respond to the complex realities of primary health care in the Congolese context.

As Dr. Shawn D. Mathis, an elder at Nashville Church of Christ, reflected from the United States, “The intersection of primary health care and spiritual formation is where lasting impact begins, when caregivers themselves are shaped by purpose, compassion, and faith.” His insight captures the heart of the initiative: that strong health systems are built not only on clinical skill, but on the character and vision of those who serve.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dr. Junior Mudji, a physician at Vanga Hospital, has led the on-the-ground organization and implementation of the program. He emphasized its broader significance: “This program is not only about strengthening leadership skills. It is about shaping the heart of healthcare in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. When physicians grow in integrity, faith, and vision, the impact reaches far beyond the hospital walls into families and entire communities.”

Building on this momentum, organizers are now partnering with a major nursing institute in Kinshasa to extend this training to nurses. This next phase will focus on equipping frontline caregivers to navigate complex change, lead within evolving systems, and continue integrating faith with practice, strengthening care for communities across the region.
