Gokwe, Zimbabwe — May 2026 — Located in northwestern Zimbabwe, Gokwe is a predominantly rural region shaped by farming communities, scattered villages, and long travel distances between towns and congregations. While Zimbabwe’s major urban centers, such as Harare — approximately 228 km (142 miles) from Gokwe — and Bulawayo — approximately 219 km (136 miles) away — provide greater access to universities, hospitals, and ministry resources.

These rural dynamics create both challenges and opportunities for ministry. Congregations frequently serve communities spread across large areas, with ministers and church members traveling village to village requiring significant time and effort for worship, Bible teaching, and evangelism. At the same time, strong community relationships and growing interest in biblical education continue to create opportunities for discipleship, leadership development, and church growth throughout the region.
Education and healthcare realities also shape everyday life in Gokwe. Students pursuing university studies at institutions such as Midlands State University often travel outside the region to continue their studies, as do those in vocational training, nursing, and technical education. Rural clinics and district health centers may serve communities across large geographic areas. During rainy seasons, road conditions can make travel especially difficult for families living in remote villages. In this context, churches often become important centers of spiritual encouragement, fellowship, and community support alongside their evangelistic work.
One of the leaders serving in this environment is Emmanuel Manenji, who has worked with the Gwenhungu Church of Christ in Gokwe for nearly a decade. Alongside his preaching and teaching efforts throughout the region, Manenji said he has worked with congregations serving approximately 300 to 450 Christians in surrounding communities.
In early 2024, Manenji helped establish the Nyamacheni Church of Christ as part of continuing evangelistic efforts in the region. Much of his ministry involves traveling between villages to teach Scripture, encourage Christians, and help strengthen congregations across rural communities.

Manenji’s ministry has also been shaped through theological studies with Harbinger Institute, an educational work supported by the Nashville Church of Christ (NCC). Through Harbinger’s online studies, he completed courses including The Bible and the Contemporary World, taught by Spencer L. Davidson, the preaching minister of NCC, Seminar in Church Leadership, taught by Dr. Shawn D. Mathis, and New Testament Survey, taught by Dr. Larry D. Mathis. Larry and Shawn are both elders at NCC.

Shawn D. Mathis described Emmanuel as “a man full of joyful and vibrant energy” who is committed to studying the Scriptures and preaching the Gospel with great fervency. Mathis added that he greatly enjoys his conversations with Emmanuel and continues to learn from him through Emmanuel’s regular participation in the Nashville Church of Christ’s online Sunday worship gatherings.
Reflecting on the influence of those studies, Manenji said, “Harbinger Institute is very important to me as I always wanted to study the truth and teach the truth and always stay in truth especially in this contemporary world.”
He and his wife, Ester, work together throughout the surrounding villages in evangelism and discipleship. Describing their ministry, Manenji explained, “We walk in the villages to spread the true and undiluted gospel to those in need. Those that receive the word are baptized to be added to the Body of Christ.”

Beyond local evangelism, Manenji also hopes to help expand opportunities for biblical training in Gokwe through a future Harbinger Institute local learning center that could serve students and congregations across the region. According to materials he provided, he believes churches in the area would strongly support expanded opportunities for theological education, ministry workshops, and leadership training for preachers and church members.
His vision includes developing a local training environment where students can study biblical teaching while remaining connected to their congregations and communities. He also hopes such efforts could contribute to future church planting and leadership development throughout rural Zimbabwe.
In correspondence with church leaders connected to Harbinger Institute, the education ministry of Nashville Church of Christ, Manenji expressed appreciation for the fellowship and theological training that have developed through the partnership. He described the teaching and encouragement received through these relationships as an important source of strength for Christians in Gokwe and said local believers remain hopeful about future opportunities for ministry development and biblical education throughout the region.
Spencer L. Davidson also noted that Emmanuel has invested in Starlink internet connectivity to strengthen communication and expand opportunities for biblical education and ministry development in Gokwe.
Larry D. Mathis commented, “The church needs more leaders who desire to study systematic theology applied to local church leadership development. We are very thankful for faithful men like brother Emmanuel.”
Ester Manenji has also expressed interest in healthcare-related studies that would further equip her to serve women and families throughout rural communities in Gokwe. Together, Emmanuel and Ester serve as a ministry team committed to evangelism, discipleship, and Christian service throughout the region.
As churches in Gokwe continue serving their communities, Emmanuel remains committed to strengthening congregations through biblical teaching, discipleship, and evangelism while building deeper fellowship with Christians engaged in shared ministry efforts around the world.
